Does it work if you try to make sound in another way?
For instance by playing wav-files?
Have you tested the soundcard with another operating system?

With FreeBSD-4.2 my sb 128 had a rather strange behaviour, I did not get
the error message that you've got, but it didn't really work...
I never succeded in getting it to work with FreeBSD, but it works fine
with other operating systems, so I guess there is some kind of defect in
the driver.
