Hmmm.. This is strange -- I would put sysinstall in debug mode
for one thing (in the options menu), run sysinstall on ttyv0,
and look at what happens on ttyv1.

Mail the lists, or search for the problem in the archives.
Worst case:
- back up /etc
- go single user
- extract the dists by hand on top
- merge /etc
- compile kernel
- reboot
I do this on at least one machine I administrate, which has
CCD drives, which are not recognized by sysinstall.
